THE DAY OF ATONEMENT or YOM KIPPUR
Mat 25:31 But when the Son of Man comes in His glory,
and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of
His glory.
Mat 25:32 And before Him shall be gathered all the
nations; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd
separates the sheep from the goats.
Mat 25:33 And indeed He will
set the sheep off His right, but the goats off the left hand.
Mat
25:34 Then the King will say to those on His right, Come, the
blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the
foundation of the world.
Mat 25:35 For I hungered, and you gave
Me food to eat; I thirsted, and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger,
and you took Me in;
Mat 25:36 naked, and you clothed Me; I was
sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.
Mat
25:37 Then the righteous will answer, saying, Lord, when did we see
You hungry, and fed You; or thirsting, and gave You drink?
Mat
25:38 And when did we see You a stranger, and took You in; or naked,
and clothed You?
Mat 25:39 And when did we see You sick, or in
prison, and came to You?
Mat 25:40 And answering, the King will
say to them, Truly I say to you, In so far as you did it to one of
these, the least of My brothers, you did it to Me.
Mat 25:41 Then
He will also say to those on His left, Go away from Me, cursed ones,
into the everlasting fire having been prepared for the Devil and his
angels.
Mat 25:42 For I hungered, and you did not give Me a thing
to eat. I thirsted and you did not give Me a thing to drink;
Mat
25:43 I was a stranger, and you did not take Me in; naked, and you
did not clothe Me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.
Mat
25:44 Then they also will answer Him, saying, Lord, when did we see
You hungering, or thirsting, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in
prison, and did not minister to You?
Mat 25:45 Then He will
answer them, saying, Truly I say to you, In so far as you did not do
it to one of these, the least, neither did you do it to Me.
Mat
25:46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment, but the
righteous into everlasting life.
On the Day of Atonement, the high priest cast lots to determine the fate of two goats: one was chosen for the Lord to be sacrificed, and the other, known as the scapegoat, was sent away into the wilderness. The tradition states that the lot for the scapegoat would often fall in the right hand, symbolizing God's choice and favor in the atonement process.
Day of Atonement Overview
The Day of Atonement, known as Yom Kippur, is a significant Jewish holiday observed on the 10th day of Tishri. It is a day dedicated to atonement and repentance, where the high priest performs specific rituals to seek forgiveness for the sins of the people.
Casting Lots Ritual
Purpose of Casting Lots
On this day, the high priest casts lots to determine the fate of two goats:
- One goat is designated for the Lord and is sacrificed as a sin offering.
- The other goat, known as the scapegoat, is sent into the wilderness, symbolically carrying away the sins of the people.
Right Hand Significance
Traditionally, the lot for the Lord was drawn from the right hand, while the lot for the scapegoat was drawn from the left. This practice is mentioned in Leviticus 16:8, where it states that Aaron shall cast lots for the two goats, indicating a divine selection process.
Historical Context
According to Jewish tradition, it is noted that for 40 years before the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE, the lot for the Lord did not come up in the right hand, which some interpret as a sign of divine disfavor. This period coincides with the time of Jesus' crucifixion, leading to various interpretations regarding the significance of these events in relation to atonement.
The casting of lots was a method used in ancient times to make decisions, believed to be guided by divine providence. This practice is reflected in several biblical instances, emphasizing its importance in determining God's will.

		Mat
5:30  And if your right hand causes you to offend, cut
it off and throw it from you, for it is profitable to you that one
of your members should perish and all your body not be thrown into
		Hell.
Mat 6:3  But you doing merciful deeds, do not let
your left know what your right hand does,

NOTE: One goat was a picture of Yeshua dying for the sins under the first Covenant, but the people had to believe in Yeshua's Death and Resurrection to have their sins removed.
